I make these Halloween deviled eggs when I want a spooky appetizer that's actually easy and doesn't involve trying to turn food into an elaborate Pinterest craft. You can make cute little pumpkins, creepy olive spiders, or mini devils, and all three start with the same simple deviled egg recipe.

I love mixing all three designs together on one platter because they look so fun without adding much extra work. Plus, it's nice to have something savory on the Halloween table when basically everything else involves chocolate, candy, or frosting.

You'll love these spooky deviled eggs because they're easy to make ahead, simple to decorate, and perfect for Halloween parties, girls' nights, movie nights, or a Halloween snack board. Make one design or go all in and make pumpkins, spiders, AND devils.

Things to Know Before Making Halloween Deviled Eggs

  • Make all three designs or pick one: The pumpkin, spider, and devil eggs all use the same basic filling, so you can easily make a mixed platter.
  • Don't add too much mayo at once: Start with 2 tablespoons and add more as needed. You want a creamy filling that's still thick enough to hold the decorations.
  • Roasted red pepper makes the filling orange: Mix a little pureed roasted red pepper into the yolks if you want a light orange filling for your pumpkin deviled eggs.
  • Prep the decorations first: Slice the olives, chives, and red bell pepper before filling the eggs so decorating goes much faster.
  • You don't need a piping bag: A zip-top sandwich bag with one corner snipped off works perfectly.

Ingredients You'll Need

  • Eggs: Six large eggs make 12 deviled egg halves. You can cook them on the stovetop, in the air fryer, or in the Instant Pot.
  • Mayonnaise: Makes the filling creamy. Start with 2 tablespoons and add another if you want a softer filling.
  • Mustard: Yellow mustard or Dijon both work, so use whichever you prefer.
  • Apple cider vinegar: Adds a little tang to balance the creamy filling.
  • Salt and pepper: Season the filling to taste.
  • Roasted red pepper: Optional, but pureeing a small amount and mixing it into the yolks creates a light orange filling that's perfect for pumpkin eggs.
  • Paprika: Adds a little more color to the pumpkins.
  • Chives: Cut into tiny pieces to make pumpkin stems.
  • Black olives: You'll cut these into bodies and legs for the spider deviled eggs.
  • Red bell pepper: Cut into tiny horns and other details for the devil eggs.

You'll also need a medium pot, mixing bowl, fork, sharp knife, and a zip-top bag or piping bag.

How to Make Halloween Deviled Eggs

Step 1: Place the eggs in a medium pot and cover them with about 1 inch of water. Cover the pot and bring the water to a boil. Turn off the heat and let the eggs sit in the hot water for 12 minutes. Transfer the eggs to an ice bath and let them cool for 10 minutes before peeling.

Step 2: Slice the cooled eggs in half lengthwise and carefully scoop the yolks into a small mixing bowl. Add the mayonnaise, mustard, apple cider vinegar, salt, and pepper. Mash everything together until smooth and creamy. For orange filling, stir in the pureed roasted red pepper.

Step 3: Spoon the filling into a zip-top sandwich bag and snip a small piece from one corner. Pipe the filling evenly into the egg whites.

Step 4: For pumpkin deviled eggs, make curved lines down the filling to create the look of a pumpkin. Sprinkle with paprika and add a small piece of chive for the stem.

Step 5: For spider deviled eggs, cut a pitted black olive in half lengthwise. Place one half on top of the filling for the spider's body, then slice the other half into thin pieces and arrange them around the body for the legs.

Step 6: For devil deviled eggs, use a sharp knife to cut tiny horns and other details from red bell pepper. Arrange the pepper pieces on top of the filled eggs to make your little devils.

Substitutions and Variations

There are plenty of easy ways to change up these Halloween deviled eggs depending on the look you're going for.

  • Make green monster eggs: Mix a little mashed avocado into the yolk filling to give it a pale green color.
  • Skip the orange filling: The pumpkin eggs are still cute with regular yellow filling. Add paprika and a chive stem and you're good to go.
  • Use Dijon mustard: Dijon gives the filling a slightly sharper flavor, while yellow mustard keeps things classic.
  • Make just one design: If you're making these for a big party and want to keep things simple, choose pumpkins, spiders, or devils instead of making all three.
  • Double the recipe: This recipe makes 12 deviled egg halves and can easily be doubled for a larger Halloween party.

What to Serve with Halloween Deviled Eggs

These spooky deviled eggs are perfect for a Halloween appetizer spread with Easy Air Fryer Halloween Mummy Dogs, pinwheels, chips and dip, veggies, a Halloween charcuterie board, or any of your favorite Halloween finger foods.

I especially like adding them when there's already a ton of Halloween candy and desserts on the table. Sometimes we need one thing that isn't covered in frosting.

Storage

Store leftover Halloween deviled eggs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

You can also hard boil and peel the eggs ahead of time, then make and decorate the deviled eggs closer to your party. If you're making the finished eggs the night before, keep them tightly covered and refrigerated until serving.
