Pinterest is one of the absolutely best ways to get your blog noticed and to potentially send you massive amounts of traffic. Pinterest isn’t technically a social media platform, it’s more of a visual search engine. Many bloggers even say Pinterest sends them 50-80%+ of their blog traffic. That’s amazing! Tailwind Tribes honestly is what’s helped me most when I just started blogging, yet because it’s a newer system, there’s still many unresolved questions I hear bloggers still having. Making sure you’re following Tailwind Tribe best practices and aren’t making Tribe mistakes you don’t even realize you’re doing!
Complaint’s about Tailwind Tribes are frequent in blogger private Facebook groups, yet I truly attribute Tribes to one of the top reasons why I had instant traffic success with my blog. I honestly believe many just haven’t quite figured out how to get Tribes working for them yet!
And that’s what my hope with sharing the unwritten Tailwind Tribe best practices and by answering common Tribe questions.
A little bit about my Tailwind Tribes Story:
As a brand new blogger, I knew I was supposed to join lots of Pinterest group boards to get seen on Pinterest, yet I had no idea how difficult it’d be to get accepted to high quality group boards. Desperately wanting to grow my blog and make it profitable as quickly as possible, struggling with group boards was discouraging. I’d recently heard about Tailwind Tribes and it definitely seemed like an easier process than getting added to Pinterest group boards!!
I threw all of my energy into using Tribes and figuring out how to grow my blog with Tailwind. This absolutely paid off for me and I consider Tailwind Tribes my blogging secret weapon and contributes to my early success as a new blogger!
I surprisingly received over 10,000 blog pageviews my first full month, almost 30,000 blog pageviews in my second month (Nov. 2017), and in my third month (December 2017), I had over 45,000 blog pageviews! This is proof of how powerful Tailwind Tribes and Pinterest strategy can be!
In my the first three months of blogging, between 35%-50% of my blog traffic came directly from Tailwind Tribes. Figuring out a successful strategy has really helped skyrocket my blog traffic with Tailwind Tribes. As part of that, making sure I’m following all Tribe best practices, plus finding solutions to common Tribe questions was critical.
Unwritten Tailwind Tribe Best Practices
Here’s an example of Tribe rules:
Make sure you follow ALL Tribe rules. The success of Tailwind Tribes relies on us all doing our part, supporting each other and helping each other grow our blogs together. If you feel a particular Tribe has rules you struggle to adhere to, go find a different one–there’s thousands!
That means if you have to re-share 2 pins for every one you post, you do it! I personally love the accountability with Tribes. While dropping a pin on a group board and not reciprocating is prolific, Tribes requires you to share content of your Tribe members, or you’ll probably get removed from the Tribe.
This means, if it’s a home decor Tribe, you don’t add finance or parenting pins. If it says not to pin more than 3 times per day to that Tribe, you follow that!
Pin Variations
Do not pin tons of variations of the same pin to your Tribes at the same time. This honestly just hurts you since you’re competing against your own pins. It also annoys Tribe members and wastes your time.
Limit a Pin Upload to 3-4 Tribes in the Same Day
Maker sure you aren’t pinning the same pin to all of your Tribes the same day! Many bloggers are in numerous Tribes and it’s annoying to see the same pins over and over on every Tribe feed. I did this once for a pin I was really excited to post and it totally backfired! I received way less re-shares that day than I typically do.
Spamming
Spamming Tribes will backfire. Bloggers will avoid your pins and you’ll possibly get dropped from the Tribes. Just. Don’t. Do. It. We all dislike spammers, don’t be one of them 😉
If you follow the rules, use Tribes regularly, vary your pins, and only upload the pin to only a few Tribes that same day, you will see improvements will Tribes!

The same questions about Tribes pop up in Facebook groups on a regular basis. Here’s easy solutions to common tribe questions that maybe you’ve had yourself.
“ Why is it hard to find Tribe content to re-share?”
How to find Tribe content to re-share:
1.Search by Blogger– If I look through the Tribe uploads and can’t find Tribe content to re-share, I’ll go check out my favorite bloggers in that Tribe to see what they’ve recently added.
2.Open up new Pinterest boards– Sometimes the issue isn’t lack of quality content, the problem is not finding something in your niche. I handled this by adding a couple Pinterest boards that still relate to my niche even if they aren’t topics I write about and re-share high quality Tribe content to these boards.
3.Pinterest Group Boards– In situations where I’m still not sure what to re-share Tribe content, I’ll add it to a relevant Pinterest group board instead of my own boards. For example, one of my Tribes always has tons of farmhouse looking décor, but that isn’t my decorating style and doesn’t fit with the look of my home décor Pinterest boards. My solution? I re-shared the farmhouse decorating pins to a relevant group board that also includes lots of farmhouse furniture.
“Why is there such a spam problem with Tribes?”
Spamming seems to unfortunately occur in both Tribes and Pinterest group boards. Most of these situations happen simply because the blogger doesn’t know not to, maybe they’re new and trying to figure things out. Uploading too much content to a Tribe at one time actually hurts that blogger because they’ll most likely get 0 re-shares, plus their pins are actually competing against each other.
Dealing with Tribe spammers:
1.Search by your favorite bloggers
2.Contact the tribe owner if it’s a major problem. They have the ability to remove spammers and Tribe members not following rules.
3.Find a new Tribe! Sometimes spam is rampant because the Tribe isn’t being monitored by the Tribe owner. If this is the case, there’s probably better Tribes out there for you!
“Why aren’t I getting re-shares or repins?”
Sometimes the answer to this question is about the Tribe, in other cases, you might need to change something that you’re doing to get noticed!
How to get more re-shares and repins :
1.Find a new Tribe
2.Create a new pin in a totally different style
3.Change your strategy! Try uploading at a different time of day, upload content more frequently or see what types of pins are getting lots of re-shares in a Tribe. Maybe that pin topic doesn’t do as well in that particular Tribe?
Just like ALL aspects of blogging, you have to put the time, energy and effort into something to truly master it. If something isn’t working for you, dig deeper to figure out what’s causing the problem!
You CAN master Tailwind Tribes too!
What Tribes questions do you still have? I’d love to have you share in the comments!

I’ve been feeling so frustrated with tribes lately especially after increasing my subscription to Tailwind so these tips are really helpful. One of the things I think I’m doing wrong is uploading my pins to all the tribes at once. You’re right, I’m sure that’s super annoying to others! I’ll switch it up from now on and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for these suggestions!
JenandMadi says
Thank you, Nicole! Hang in there with tribes, it really takes focusing on something to get it down well. There’s so much to learn with blogging, you just have to chip away at it a little at a time. I’m glad my tips helped! 🙂 Jen

This is EXACTLY the kind of no fluff content about Pinterest I’d been searching for! I’m doing pretty well with Pinterest now (o even work as a part time Pinterest VA as a side hustle) However with Tailwind, I wasn’t seeing as great of results I had compared to Boardbooster so these tribe tips are great points. To me, the spamming just seemed common sense, but I’ll admit I would get overzealous at sharing all my new pins to a bunch of tribes at once. I’ll commit to spreading them out more.
I’m so tired of seeing those posts where bloggers claim to only have to spend “one hour a week on Pinterest” all thanks to Tailwind: they don’t explain how much time it actually takes to develop a strategy that gets you results, and that’s certainly much much more work than just scheduling a bunch of random pins with a tool and calling it a day.
Btw, I signed up for your tribes freebie: thanks for the discount on that new ebook of yours!

Thank you so much, Haneef! Your feedback really means a lot to me! I’m definitely a no fluff person and I get tired of seeing the same posts as you do about Tailwind (and blogging) being so easy! Everything definitely takes time to figure out what works best for your blog or a clients blog. Thank you for purchasing my book also, please contact me if you have any questions as you work through the material!

Thanks for this post…. I am brand new to Tailwind and I don’t know why, but it absolutely freaks me out! Your pointers and tips are a great resource! (Otherwise, I’d probably make the mistake of posting the same pin to every tribe)

I believe all the points are quite valid.
What I have figured out with tribes is about the time consuming it takes, because we cant schedule the tribe submissions and also add delays or scheduling date like we do in pinterest itself.
So its very manual, plus to put your ratios at 1:1 or 2:1 if you are using tribes as you should , that is being is 20,30, 40 tribes I am quite sure that your entire will be living in the Tribes ecosystem.
That’s why some bloggers got tons of traffic from tribes, because they live there ehehe…
I have powered up to the unlimited level and its awesome but now I am facing the time consuming it takes… probably I will need to hire a VA for this… maybe that’s the mindset of using tribes at his full potential.

Hi Jen and Madi,
Thanks for sharing this – it’s super helpful.
I couldn’t agree more with your point on limiting the same pin to a maximum of 3-4 Tribes per day…I made this mistake consistently at the start, and it wasn’t until I realized that 90% of my Tribes have pretty much the same audience that I got my act together! I’ve seen a pretty sizeable jump in engagement since staggering my pins across my various Tribes, so I’d share your recommendation of resisting the temptation to share everything in one go as it’ll just end up being a waste of time.
Thanks again,
Jonathan

“WHY IS IT HARD TO FIND TRIBE CONTENT TO RE-SHARE?”
If you can’t find content to re-share, that you don’t belong in that tribe. Tribes are niche related and you should join only ones that are compliant with your Pinterest’s profile niche.

Hey Jen & Madi,
As a new Tailwind user (bought an annual subscription today) this was perfect for me. The point about not using the same pin across all tribes due to possibly having the same members was great!
Great post and enjoyed reading, all the best for 2019!
