If you've ever wanted to make something super easy and festive without spending hours baking, Christmas bark is your new best friend. Holiday chocolate bark is the #1 festive treat I make (and gift!) every December, bonus that it takes 10 minutes to make!

I show you how to make Christmas bark two ways: melting chocolate bars in the oven OR by microwaving chocolate chips.

How to make chocolate Christmas bark

There's two ways to make chocolate bark:

  1. Bake chocolate bars in the oven. This method is great for making swirl bark using multiple kinds of chocolate.
  2. Microwaving chocolate chips. This is the best method (and cheapest) if you're using one kind of chocolate.

You take my popular swirl Christmas pretzel bark recipe and making it with one of the 12 festive variations listed below. If you want to make microwave bark with chocolate chips, it's the same process as my caramel apple bark.

All you do is melt chocolate, swirl (or layer) your favorite kinds together, and load it up with toppings like candy canes, pretzels, or M&M's. Once it sets, just break it into pieces, and boom, instant holiday treat that looks like you spent way more effort than you actually did.

Whether you're going for peppermint, caramel pretzel, or something fun like reindeer bark, every version is perfect for gifting, parties, or snacking while you watch Christmas movies in pajamas.

Baking Christmas Bark

If you're swirling different types of chocolate together, the best way to do that is by baking them. Use 3 bars if you're baking a 9x13 size batch, use 6 bars and double the recipes if you're making a large sheet pan size for gifting.

Ingredients

  • 3-6 chocolate bars - 4 oz each (use white, milk, and/or dark chocolate). My favorite is Ghirardelli chocolate bars. If you use a variety of brands they might not be of equal width or thickness.
  • Red, green, and white sprinkles
  • Milk chocolate M&M's or crushed candy canes
  • Broken pretzels or star pretzels (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 175°F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Unwrap the chocolate bars and place them on a ¼ size baking sheet (9x13 size). Alternate white, milk, and dark chocolate for a marbled swirl.
  3. Bake for 5+ minutes until just softened. Keep a close eye-overheating will make the chocolate grainy.
  4. Swirl gently with a toothpick or skewer to create a marble pattern.
  5. Add toppings immediately while the chocolate is still warm.
  6. Cool completely at room temperature, then refrigerate for 2 hours to set.
  7. Break into pieces and store in the fridge for up to a week.

Microwaving Christmas Bark

Microwaving bark is best when you're using just one kind of chocolate. It's easy and it's the cheapest option for making holiday bark.

Ingredients

  • 12 oz bag chocolate chips of your choosing (milk chocolate, semi sweet, dark chocolate, or white chocolate
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil - optional but the chocolate melts better
  • Toppings - Oreos, M&Ms, pretzels, crushed candy canes, chopped cookies, etc.
  • Festive holiday sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Add the chocolate chips and coconut oil to a microwave safe bowl.
  2. Microwave the chocolate in 30 second increments, stirring after each 30 second increment. You'll want to do this until the chocolate is just melted (in total I cooked mine 60-90 seconds) since it starts to get grainy or burn pretty easily.
  3. Spread the chocolate on a parchment paper lined pan.
  4. Add toppings immediately while the chocolate is still warm.
  5. Cool completely at room temperature, then refrigerate for 2 hours to set.
  6. Break into pieces and store in the fridge for up to a week.

Tips for Christmas Bark Candy

  • Read the full tutorial for step-by-step photos on our Chocolate Christmas Bark with Pretzels and Candy post.
  • Use high-quality chocolate like Lindt or Ghirardelli for a smooth melt.
  • Don't over-melt. You want the chocolate just soft enough to swirl.
  • Add toppings fast before it sets. You want them to sink into the melty chocolate so the toppings stick.
  • Adding 1 tablespoon of coconut oil helps get a smoother consistency when microwaving chocolate chips.
  • Chill completely (at least 1-2 hours) before breaking.

FAQ: Everything You Need to Know About Making Christmas Bark

What's the best chocolate to use?
Go for good-quality chocolate bars like Lindt or Ghirardelli. They melt smoother and look shinier than chocolate chips or generic store brand chocolate bars.

How do I keep the chocolate from burning?
Low and slow. Bake at 175°F for about 5 minutes, literally just until softened. If you over-melt, it'll get grainy and lose its shine.

Can I melt the chocolate in the microwave?
Yes. Microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring each time until smooth. Don't rush it or it can seize up. You can use either chopped chocolate bars or chocolate chips if you're melting it in the microwave.

How thick should the bark be?
About ¼ inch thick is perfect! It's thin enough to break easily but thick enough for toppings to stick.

How do I make the chocolate swirl?
Once softened, drag a toothpick or skewer through the chocolate in figure-eight motions. Don't overdo it or the colors will just mix.

Can I add flavor extracts?
Totally. Peppermint extract (¼ teaspoon) adds a minty flavor, or try vanilla extract for white chocolate. Just a tiny bit goes a long way. Or feel free to make these boozy with a splash of your favorite liquor instead!

How do I store it?
Keep Christmas candy bark in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week, or freeze up to a month. Use parchment paper between layers.

What's the best way to gift Christmas bark?
Package it in clear bags or tins, tie with ribbon, and add a cute tag. Mix a few flavors together for a DIY candy gift box.
